Day 3 of #marchmeetthemaker : How You Started

March 4, 2018

And the honest answer is, I don't really know! It seemed to be a natural progression for me to venture into jewellery making. Since I was little I've enjoyed being creative, and especially doing anything fiddly or minutely detailed. Through School, College & University and all my jobs since its been much the same. When I left uni I started working at a local picture framers where my eye for colour was a perfect fit for choosing colour/style combos with customers for their artworks. I soon learned to frame the works too where I ended up getting most of the fiddly and awkward jobs that no one else wanted to do as I loved the attention to detail and perfectionism!

It was around this time I started to make jewellery, playing with colours and textures and teaching myself the techniques. My jobs changed to working in galleries for a number of years which I fell head over heels in love with. My jewellery improved alongside my career and I was selling it successfully in galleries too. As my career managing galleries grew, I found I had less and less time to make jewellery and it took the backseat for a few years. I made the decision nearly 2 years ago (shortly after I got married) that my work/life balance wasn't as healthy as it should be and that something needed to change. So I now work in a wonderful local business that sells beautiful & unusual home wares and period ironmongery which gives me much more headspace to dedicate time to my jewellery once again. And so here I am! Building the momentum back up again and loving the new leg of this journey.

This necklace was one of my first 'proper' creations, threading seed beads and tiny shells to create this multi-strand necklace that I'm too scared to wear/sell as I don't trust the old nylon beading thread, but too stubborn to un-do it as it took me hours to make!! So it stays in the back of my jewellery drawer as a reminder of how far I've come! 😂
